چکیده

Inorganic Cr(III) and Cr(VI) have contrasting biological, geochemical and toxicology effects. Cr(III) is considered as an essential species for the proper functioning of living organisms but Cr(VI) is toxic for the biological systems. An off-line speciation method using Chelex-100 has been practiced for speciation to Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from surface waters of rivers. The underlying principal of this separation method is based on the ability of cationic Cr(III) to be retained by the resin Chelex-100 while the anionic Cr(VI) remained in the sample matrices. The efficiency of this technique was improved by studying the effect of resin pH. Quantitative determination using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was carried out after the separation to determine the total Cr and Cr(VI) in the liquid matrices. The precision and the accuracy of the quantitative analysis were evaluated by using standard reference material NRCC CASS-2. Intercomparison of INAA and ICP-MS results were determined. The quantity of inorganic Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in the surface water of rivers in the vicinity of industrial areas was investigated together with the determination of the physical properties of the water rivers during sampling.

Speciation of chromium in seawater by ICP-AES with dual mini-columns containing chelating resin.

A method for the preconcentration and speciation of chromium in seawater was developed. On-line preconcentration and determination were carried out by using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) with dual mini-columns containing a chelating resin. In this system, Cr(III) was collected on the first column. The effluent containing residual chromium from the first colum...

Separation of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) by ion chromatography and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer as element-selective detector.

Due to its extensive use in industrial processes, large quantities of chromium compounds are discharged into the environment. Common approaches for the speciation of Cr employ the determination of Cr(VI) and total Cr. The focus of the present work was a separation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species, with a minimum of sample preparation, by keeping an eye on the more relevant and toxic Cr(VI). For th...

Speciation of chromium in cow’s milk by solid-phase extraction/dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (DRC-ICP-MS)†

Chromium can act either as an essential micronutrient or a chemical carcinogen, depending on its oxidation state. Of the two most stable chromium oxidation states, Cr(VI) is a known carcinogen, while Cr(III) is an essential element. Determination of total Cr cannot therefore be used to evaluate food safety of dairy products, as speciation is required for accurate assessment of potential toxicit...

Development of a method for the simultaneous detection of Cr(iii) and Cr(vi) in exhaled breath condensate samples using μLC-ICP-MS

The method described in this study is a robust and sensitive method for the simultaneous determination of trivalent and hexavalent chromium (Cr(III) and Cr(VI)) in an exhaled breath condensate (EBC) sample and drinking water proficiency testing material sample. The method uses a hyphenated micro liquid chromatography (mLC) system coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)....

Ion Chromatography (IC) ICP-MS forChromium Speciation in Natural Samples

Trace measurements of the element chromium (Cr) are of interest in a wide range of applications and matrices. In the environment, Cr exists in two different oxidation states, the trivalent Cr(III) cation and hexavalent Cr(VI) anion. In mammals, Cr(III) is an essential element involved in the regulation of glucose; however, the element in its hexavalent form demonstrates mutagenic and carcinogen...
